Whipsnade Visitors Centre - Steel sheet piled wall to basement Whipsnade Visitors Centre - Construction of RC ground floor slab

Whipsnade Visitors Centre

  • Architect - ECD
  • Location - Bedfordshire
  • Project Value - £2.5m

The new visitor’s hub is planned within the context of the 2020 Vision for Whipsnade Wildlife Animal Park. The intention is to achieve an ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating through high coordination of design and the use of sustainable products and technologies. The facility is being designed to reflect the zoo’s commitment to conservation and sustainability yet being capable of expansion because it could double or even treble in size in the future.

The exisiting concrete amphitheatre is to be crushed and reused for the piling platform for the site. This will negate the need for exporting and importing fill and reducing the structure’s carbon footprint. Timber has been chosen for the main frame elements in conjuction with rammed earth walls used to stabilise the structure.
