Ocean Village is brand of cruise ship geared toward the younger market. As the brand is growing they have been purchasing and refurbishing more vessels for their cruises. Packman Lucas were approached to design a performance stage for one of these ships- Ocean Village Two.

The structure was required to look dynamic and provide a sufficiently versatile space for a variety aerial performances to be performed. The proposal decided upon was to create two interlocking, circular trusses, which would provide a clean structural form, giving depth to the performance area and the capability of supporting several performance pieces simultaneously.

The design challenge came in the form of the complex loading combinations this multiple use brought up- along with modelling the potential forces the sea and wind could apply to the frame. When it came to detailing the structure this was coupled with a requirement for a rapid erection process as the ship was only in dock for a brief period for refurbishment and had already been fully booked for it’s first cruise.

The structure was used during the ships opening ceremony and has been playing host to a performance based upon Holsts “The Planets” which has been thrilling audiences during their vacation touring the Med.
