To mark the Scouting movement’s centenary and 100 years since Baden-Powell held his experimental scout camp on Brownsea Island a new outdoor activity centre was developed on the Island in conjunction with the National Trust and English Nature.
The centre had to reflect the ethos of the Scouting Movement of embracing sustainability and “leaving the land as found”. Materials also had to be easily transportable both to and on the Island which is designated as an SSSI by English Nature.
The two buildings forming the centre are inspired by the tents used in the original encampment.
Prefabricated timber cassettes form the pitched roof, walls and floor with the foundations being on steel helical screw piles.
