Barking Town Hall

  • Architect - Hawkins\Brown
  • Location - London, IG11
  • Project Value - £120,000

This is an example of an imposing government building that had become out of date by virtue of the changing role of the town hall and its associated administration functions.

The original arrangement had a two storey atrium as the main entrance, with matching flights of stairs at either side that gave access to a gallery at first floor that served the main council chamber. The atrium was topped with a generous roof light that made the whole entrance area light and open. Our brief was to design a fill-in first floor that would give the councillors a real ante space to circulate in, but at the same time, transmit as much light as possible to the ground level. Our solution was a solid glass floor of 150mm thickness over an area measuring ten metres by fifteen metres.
